High School English at a Glance

Both our core beliefs and our thought process behind the design can be seen in every lesson. It is critical to have an understanding of these beliefs so that you can teach the lessons to their fullest potential. Watch the video for a brief overview of what our English classrooms looks like.

Belief #2

We Must Build Knowledge and Vocabulary Through Informational Texts.

By integrating informational reading into the curriculum, we provide students with essential background knowledge and a robust vocabulary. After a student's ability to decode words, their next block in comprehension is vocabulary and background knowledge. We take the time to support these areas to enhance comprehension.

Belief #1

We Must Read Complex Texts.

Students engage with literature and informational texts that challenge them intellectually and inspire them personally. Through these readings, they gain a deeper understanding of themselves and the world, encouraging critical thinking and action.

Belief #3

We Must Have Student Led, Text-Dependent Discussions.

Learning is an active process, and our approach prioritizes student-driven conversations. Through structured yet open-ended discussions, students develop the ability to analyze texts deeply, articulate their perspectives, and engage in meaningful dialogue with peers.

Belief #4

We Must Use Authentic Tasks for Real World Application.

Beyond traditional analysis papers, our students participate in tasks that mirror real-world writing experiences. Whether crafting persuasive arguments, investigative reports, or multimedia presentations, students develop skills that are relevant beyond the classroom.

Belief #5

We Must Prepare Students for the Future.

Every experience in our ELA classrooms is designed to propel students into their next stages of life, whether that be college, career, or civic engagement. By emphasizing critical thinking, research skills, and articulate communication, we empower students to navigate and shape their futures.
