The rise and fall of statues

What do you know about this monument?

Mount Rushmore is a monument in the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota. It consists of huge faces carved into the side of a mountain. The faces are those of four U.S. presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. The sculpture and surrounding area are known as the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

For some people, especially Native peoples, Mount Rushmore does not represent positive history. This is because Mount Rushmore was built on land that was taken illegally by the U.S. government. In 1868, the U.S. government signed a treaty, or agreement, with the Oceti Sakowin (Sioux). The treaty promised that the Black Hills—sacred land to the Oceti Sakowin—would be Oceti Sakowin land forever. Within 10 years, the U.S. government had taken the land from them. The Oceti Sakowin and many other people were upset by the decision to build a monument in the Black Hills to leaders of the government that had stolen the land.

The mountain where Mount Rushmore is located rises to a height of 5,725 feet (1,745 meters). The sculpture is at the top of the mountain’s southeastern side. It was carved out of a solid granite rock face. Each carving is about 60 feet (18 meters) tall. The American sculptor Gutzon Borglum designed the sculpture. He said that the four presidents symbolize the first 150 years of the United States. Washington represents the country’s founding. Jefferson stands for its westward expansion. Roosevelt is a symbol of the country’s growing strength. Lincoln represents its preservation through the American Civil War.
