Message from Mrs Dent

As we head into the final week of the Lent Term, there is is still much going on and much to achieve. We have been able to celebrate some notable successes this week: Some of our Year 13 BTEC students have received results of their examined assessment, securing an amazing clutch of Distinction and Distinction Star results. A huge well done to Isla, Sophie, Ilaria and Lily who can be immensely proud of their results - testament to their consistent effort over the duration of the course. Special mention must go to Lily for attaining full marks - yes, 100% - on the examined unit of her Countryside Managment BTEC - a simply extraordinary achievment. St Aidan's girls made a significant contribution to the individual small bore shooting contest this week, making up 7 of the 14 entries. Well done to Connie, Izzie, Mia, Cecilie, Charlotte, Hattie and Juliette. Best of all is Connie coming 1st as 'best shot' across the school. Connie will receive the Johnson-Fergusson Trophy at Exhibition this year.

Hats off to the entire house who have been rehearsing hard all week, including four early morning rehearsals, honing their rendition of 'Rolling in the Deep' for today's House Recital and the upcoming Interhouse Music Competition next Monday. Today we mark St Benedict's Day with Whole School Mass and a festal lunch. We greatly enjoyed taking part in Compline as a school in the Abbey Church last evening - our Monday evenings of sung Compine in house allowed the girls to contribute with confidence to what was a moving experience. With our Schola members singing in the St John's Passion this coming Sunday and Year 13 Retreat on Wednesday, there remain key opportunities for Lenten reflection before we break for the Easter holiday.

A reminder that if you'd like to keep up with the goings on of the House and girls, then do find us on social media. Please do also feel free to drop me line with news or pictures of interesting or note-worthy things the girls have been up to in the holidays. It's always nice to share their experience more widely on these pages to celebrate the many gifts and achievements of the girls.

St Benedict's Day celebrations started with Sung Compline last night and continued with Abbot Robert's memorable Mass today and a beautiful and delicious house lunch
Noelle was commended this week for her brilliant article on the school trip to Greece!
Dasha delivered a brilliant assembly speech on cultural diversity at assembly
Good morning everyone! I hope you had a good start of the week. Today , I would like to talk about cultural diversity and how I have experienced it as an overseas student . This journey has been rich and has shaped my identity and broadened my understanding of different mindsets and cultural perspectives .I grew up in Ukraine until I was 14 . My environment was relatively homogenous, with shared traditions , language and cultural norms . This familiarity provided comfort. However, one day I woke up in the morning and I didn’t have any other choice as to leave my country due to the Russian invasion in Ukraine in 2022. I never thought that I would have to leave my homeland , nevertheless it wasn’t my choice I was forced by circumstance . Upon arriving in the UK , I encountered challenges that tested my resilience and adaptability. One of the first challenges was a tap situation. When I first saw the taps in the UK, I had a mini existential crisis. However , I finally understood why Brexit happened. The whole of Europe has figured out how to mix hot and cold water into one tap, however the UK decided to leave to protect their sacred tradition of burning and freezing their hands at the same time.In Ukraine, we keep things simple—one tap, one mixer, and no risk of turning your morning routine into an Olympic sport. Navigating a new educational system , overcoming language barriers and integrating into a different culture required significant effort. The diversity around me has enriched my perspective and strengthened my ability to adapt to new environments . Engaging with peers from different backgrounds compelled me to step out of my comfort zone , fostering adaptability and open-mindedness . I began to see the world through multiple lenses, enriching my perspective and enhancing my empathy towards others. From my point of view , cultural diversity plays a very important role enhancing our vibrant and dynamic school community . Each student’s unique background contributes to a richer collective experience . We speak different languages, celebrate different holidays, and have unique stories to tell . They allow us to learn from one another , to understand new perspectives and to grow as individuals . Diversity also makes education richer . Imagine learning about world history , literature or art from people who have lived those experiences or inherited them through their families . We don’t just study cultures - we experience them. Thank you for your attention . Have a great day !

Budapest as a city is beautiful, amazing and fun, with great people here."

Focus & Prayer

This last week has been a huge celebration of all that is good about life in St. Cuthbert’s and St. Thomas’ House and Ampleforth College as a whole. We enjoyed coming together as a house to perform the House Recital and House Song. A busy weekend, including a lovely House Social watching rugby, playing cards and on the playstation with lots of food (of course). The big event of the year, House Punch, was a roaring success and the sense of community was clear to see. Harry delivered a thoughtful speech recognizing the successes of the house whilst thanking those who contribute to the success. The week ends with St Benedict’s Day, a celebration of one of our patron Saints. Compline, deaneries, mass and a celebration banquet lunch have given the boys the chance to reflect, give thanks and celebrate. A hectic but fulfilling week leading to the last one of term, please do remember to update the system with travel plans for the upcoming Easter break, even if it is just to confirm you are collecting in person!

Message from the Housemaster

This week was a much busier one, with most events being of a culinary nature and mostly taking place in the house study. On Monday, we had to admit defeat to St John's in the Senior Hockey tournament and came a disappointing 2nd place. We have been busy practicing for next Monday's House Music Competition but all eyes are set on next Thursday's beginning of the Easter Holidays. For our Remove and Upper Sixth, this will be a time of thorough revision and practice papers. I wish all our parents and boys a wonderful Easter celebration and God's blessings.

Hospitality

On Friday, we had six prospective year 12 boys staying over for a taster day (and night). After socialising in Windmill, we had a mini Deli Night together with Head Monitor Finbar, Head of House Alois and Assistant Head of House Emil. And of course Mr Jackson, who never misses a food event...

Friday Night Entertainment

Later that evening, Richard, Teddy, Jonty and Charles met up for poker night. Rest assured, no money changed hands and normal bed times were adhered to!

Saturday Social

On Saturday night, we had all our boys in house for a Social. The Upper Sixth enjoyed the Rugby 6 Nations and a curry.

St Patrick's Day Celebration

Encouraged by Finbar, we held the inaugural St Patrick's Day celebration in DO's on Tuesday.

St Patrick's Day Celebration

The Sixth Formers enjoyed Guinness, soda bread, Irish butter and black pudding.

St Patrick's Day Celebration

Apart from sampling Irish delicatessen, we also broke into song with many fine Irish tunes.

St Patrick's Day Celebration

Mauricio (Chile) and Caspar (Germany) were delighted to be able to experience the delights of yet another culture!

St Benedict's Feast Day

Today (Friday), we are celebrating the passing of St Benedict. Finbar offering the first reading during this morning's mass, presided over by our Abbot.

St Benedict's Feast Day

To mark the importance of the day, our kitchen staff cooked tons of steaks, chips, pepper sauce, onion rings and tomatoes. Happy boys!

Last but not least

Our year 10s learning the hard way that it is not a good idea to be repeatedly late to lunch by cleaning the tables in the refectory after the meal.

Last but not least #2

On Wednesday, Rebecca was received into the Catholic church by Fr Henry. Living and working at Ampleforth truly is a transformational experience.

Message from the Housemaster

Dear Parents and Guardians, Cultural diversity week has been brilliant here in St Hugh's with breakfasts from around the world and crafty flags being produced for the study fridge. It has been wonderful seeing the boys show the passion for these initiatives and the interest and intrigue in the dishes served and the stories behind the meals. Dawn has been instrumental in getting these things off the ground and our sincere thanks go to her. We have been busy preparing for next week's House Singing Competition and, although our rendition of Angels by Robbie Williams is good, we will pause a little before entering Britain's Got Talent 2025. With one more weekend before the Easter holiday period, I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy time. The Year 11, 12 and 13 students will be working hard on their upcoming exams; for the public examination students, it's their last extended break from school before their formal tests so we wish them all the best for this period of preparation. I do hope this newsletter finds you all well and looking forward to seeing your boys soon. Dan Housemaster, St Hugh's House

Message from Ms Paterson

Dear Parents The last full week of term and as predicted it has flown by. Winning interhouse netball both inters and seniors (well done to Dilly our Netball Captain for leading the team to victory) thank you to all the girls that took part! Well done to Hannah Tench who has been named as a Vice Captain of Cricket. St Margaret's have been in top form across the board in sports so far this term. As part of Lent our preparations we have had varying degrees of success. Many of the House attended early morning Mass (7am) as part of their devotions. I have sadly not made it yet but I still have 5 chances left! Margaret's girls in different year groups attending the chaplaincy tea and toast on a Thursday, a little fellowship to help them through the week. As Pope Francis said "Eat whatever you want during Holy Week because the sacrifice is not in the stomach but in the heart". So we ate penguins for deanery snacks as sanctioned by Pope Francis but then some girls cleaned the kitchen without being asked! We were also lucky enough to celebrate whole school compline as part of St Benedict's day festivites which was truly quite an amazing and moving experience. The girls have been practising for House music and they are excellent made even more so by the addition of Tamara and Hen who had secretly been practising playing the song on the guitar making St Margaret's look and sound twice as awesome, which was hard to do. Fingers crossed that in the next newsletter I am describing the moment we won House music. Rebecca
