Late-onset group B streptococcus infection :
Early-onset neonatal sepsis :

Two types of infections :

  • First 7 days of life
  • Non-specific symptoms
  • Presents with sepsis, pneumonia, respiratory distress, meningitis
  • 7 to 90 days
  • Presents with fever or meningitis
  • Less fatal type of infection

Mechanism of Strep B

  • Group B treptococcus or GBS, gram POSITIVE bacterium

  • Gastrointestinal, genital and urinary tracts
  • Most cases : doesn't cause any issues
  • Is NOT a STI !
  • Hand-holding, kissing, close physical contact, etc.
  • 1 in 4 pregnant women carries GBS
  • Transmitted from MOTHER TO THE BABY
