How is Sant Jordi celebrated?

Sant Jordi can be best enjoyed in Catalonia, especially in Barcelona, where streets like La Rambla and Passeig de Gràcia are filled with bookstalls, flower vendors, and author signings. Other cities like Girona, Tarragona, and Lleida also host lively celebrations with literary events, cultural performances, and traditional festivities. Bookstores, libraries, and cultural centers across Catalonia organize readings, discussions, and activities for all ages. Even outside Catalonia, some international Catalan communities celebrate the day, bringing a piece of this unique tradition to other parts of the world.

When was it first celebrated?

The origins of Sant Jordi as a celebration in Catalonia date back to the 15th century, when April 23rd was established as a feast day in honor of Saint George, the patron saint of Catalonia. By the 16th century, the tradition of giving roses began, as the Palau de la Generalitat hosted a rose fair for engaged and married couples. The literary aspect was added in 1926, when Spain declared April 23rd as Book Day, later reinforced by UNESCO’s recognition of World Book and Copyright Day in 1995. Over time, Sant Jordi evolved into the vibrant cultural and literary celebration it is today.
