A quantifier is a word or phrase used to talk about quantities. We use quantifiers when we want to give someone information about the number of people, animals or things.
Quantifiers can refer to countable or uncountable elements.
Countable
Uncountable
COUNTABLE
We use MANY to talk about countable nouns
We use TOO MANY to talk about a higher amount than expected.
We use A FEW with countable nouns to talk about an indefinite group of elements.
UNCOUNTABLE
It is used to quantify uncountable nouns.
It is used with uncountable to refer to a higher amount than we expect.
It is used with uncountable to refer to a smaller amount than we expect.
A lot of / A lot
- A lot is only used at the end of a sentence.
- A lot of never goes at the end of a sentence.
- With plural countables
- With uncountables.
- Lots of is a more colloquial of A lot of
Enough / Not enough
We use them to express the amount (or not) needed or expected. They are used with plural countables and uncountables.
Too
Used before adjectives to express a higher amount than we expected
Plenty of
We use it before both countable and uncountable nouns to mean ‘a lot’, ‘a large quantity’
