Acid rain is an environmental phenomenon that occurs when precipitation, such as rain, snow, or hail, becomes more acidic than normal. This happens primarily due to the release of pollutants into the atmosphere, such as sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), which come from human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and industry. When these gases combine with water vapor in the atmosphere, they form acids that then fall to earth, affecting ecosystems, soils, bodies of water, and human-made structures.

Causes of Acid Rain

- Industrial Emissions: Factories and power plants that burn fossil fuels are the main sources of SO₂ and NOₓ. - Transportation: Vehicles also contribute to the emission of these gases. - Agricultural Activities: The use of fertilizers can release ammonia, which also contributes to acid rain.

Effects of Acid Rain

- Aquatic Ecosystems: It can acidify rivers and lakes, affecting aquatic life. - Vegetation: It damages trees and plants, weakening their growth and increasing their vulnerability to disease. - Infrastructure: It corrodes buildings and monuments, especially those made of limestone and marble.
