- Compare public and private transportation.
start
There are several different private transportation options. You can choose nonmotorized options such as bikes, scooters, and skateboards. Or, you can choose motorized options such as cars, electric scooters, and mopeds. In addition to the different vehicle choices, you can also share transportation.
Sharing Transportation
When individuals carpool, they make arrangements to travel in the same vehicle regularly. People often make this choice when they work or go to school in the same location.
Rideshare started as being similar to carpooling, to share a vehicle with others but has changed to include any travel in a private vehicle, driven by the owner, for a fee.

Other Forms of Private Transportation
Rideshare companies and taxis provide the same basic service, but their business models differ. Rideshare companies are technology-based and provide service directly from an app. Taxis are services regulated by the government, with fixed fare rates, that can be booked in advance or hailed on the streets.
Rental Cars
Another common form of private transportation is rental cars. With rental cars, you can access a private vehicle for a set time frame. Some services allow hourly rentals for shorter tasks, like grocery shopping. Car-sharing companies are fast-growing and quickly gaining popularity in cities across the United States.
