Where is the Grand Canyon?
The Grand Canyon is in the north-east of Arizona
What's the canyon like?
It’s an enormous valley with steep sides, the Grand Canyon offers one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. The canyon looks stripy because there are nine different layers of rock. Each layer is a different colour: brown, purple and even pink and they contain fossils of different periods
How was it created and what is the Colorado River?
For millions of years the wind and the Colorado River have cut their ways through the rocks and have formed a canyon so the Grand Canyon was formed by the action of the Colorado River which flows along the bottom of the canyon. It has taken the river six million years to form the canyon.
How long is it? and how deep is it?
It is 446 km long, 29 km wide and 1500 m deep, the canyons are deep gorges with very steep sides.
What animals are there?
In the Grand Canyon there are coyotes and bobcats,Bighorn Sheep Mountain Lion,Rock Squirrel,Mule Deer,Collared Lizard,Canyon Wren,Greater Roadrunner
Climate
The Grand Canyon has six different climates depending on the altitude: Hot desert: at the bottom, very hot and dry. Hot steppe: hot and dry, but a little less extreme. Cold steppe: lower temperatures, dry climate. Mediterranean: dry summers, mild and rainy winters. Humid continental: marked seasons, more rain. Alpine: cool in summer, cold and snowy in winter.
Who are the Hualapai Indians?
Hualapai Indians are the owners of the territory. In the future they plan to build an Indian village and luxury desort. But not all the Hualapai Indians are happy - some think that it is not right to commercialise their sacred home.
What is the Skywalk?
The Grand Canyon Skywalk opened in 2007 and it’s a curved balcony over the Grand Canyon, it prejects 21 metres out over the canyon and it is made of glass so you can see all the way to the bottom of the canyon.
What can you do here?
People like travelling down to the bottom of a mule but the canyon is so deep that this takes a whole day and you have to sleep overnight at the bottom of the canyon. Tourists can visit the canyon in many other ways, too - on foot, by helicopter or by plane, rafting and by visiting the Skywalk.
Why did they build the Skywalk?
Hualapai Indians built the skywalk to create more work for their people and to attract more people to the area.
Curiosity
About 5,000,000 people visit the canyon every year.
