Historical information

Bennelong Point

Location

Bennelong Point / Dubbagullee, the peninsula on the eastern side of Sydney Cove, was the site of a brick hut built for Bennelong by Governor Arthur Phillip in 1790.

General information

Bennelong Point, originally known as Tubowgule by the Gadigal people, was a small tidal island in Sydney Harbour. In 1788, it was briefly called Cattle Point, then Limeburner’s Point when convicts burned oyster shells for mortar. It was later named after Bennelong, an Aboriginal man who acted as a cultural mediator for the British and had a brick hut built there. In 1798, a battery was constructed, and by 1818, the island was connected to the mainland for Fort Macquarie. These historical layers were rediscovered in the 1950s during excavations for the Sydney Opera House.
