WHY HERRERA DRESSES ALT? Herrera explains that her major inspirations for her fashion sense were exposure to alternative media and culture, as well as her older brother, who's a makeup artist. After receiving judgement throughout her middle school years, Herrera can clearly recognize the stereotype of alternative people. . “People assume we’re always going out, we're doing something, we have bad grades; it's always an assumption,” Herrera said. Although dressing alternative comes with critiques, Herrera wants to share with those who are new to the alternative community to acknowledge that their style isn’t immoral and everybody always starts somewhere. Despite not starting off with the best outfits herself, Herrera explained that being alternative is beyond the clothes and anything you wear is authentically you.
