Mary Shelley was the daughter of philosopher William Godwin and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft. She lost her mother ata young age and she became obsessed with the themes of death and life that are the main topics of Frankenstein.

Frankenstein is one of the most famous gothic novels written in the 19th century during the romantic era.romantic authors, composers and painters used to insert in their artworks the concept of the sublime.
The birth of the story
Lord Byron challenged Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley, her housband, and John Polidori to write the best horror novel; this happened during the year without summer (winter lasted all year long because of the Tambora eruption in indonesia).
The three male writers didn't invent anything interesting as Mary Shelley did, indeed she wrote the first edition of Frankenstein that was published anonimously. Also the second edition of 1818 was anonimous and the name of the writer appeared on the book only in 1831.
Characters
- Victor Frankenstein: a scientist obsessed with the creation of life from death;
- The Creature: he represents the alter ego of Victor as someone who wants to act good but acts evil.
- Captain Walton: he narrates the story and his north pole expedition is symbol to Victor's ambition.
Sice the death of Victor's mother the Scientist become obsessed with the secret of life and his goal in life is to create life from non-alive things.he creates his Creature but he is horrified by his aspect and abandones him. Mary shelley wants to talk about the relationship that should exist between the creator (of any type of things) and his creation thet should be treated like a son.
