Edouard ClaparèdeIn campo pedagogico fu uno dei massimi esponenti, in Europa, di quell’approccio sperimentale, imperniato sugli interessi del bambino, che, negli Stati Uniti, ebbe in Dewey il rappresentante più autorevole. Dopo essere stato promotore di una riforma dell’insegnamento secondo i concetti di una «scuola su misura», si pose all’avanguardia di quel movimento che prese il nome di «attivismo pedagogico» e il cui presupposto fondamentale è uno stretto rapporto fra psicologia ed educazione. Ovide DecrolyNello studio delle attività di apprendimento il D., ispirandosi anche alla scuola logica della Gestalt, afferma che il bambino coglie "globalmente" nella percezione l'oggetto che gli si presenta in situazioni concrete, in cui, oltre all'attività percettiva, entrano in gioco anche le emozioni, gli interessi, gli "stati d'animo". Maria Montessori

Maria Montessori Il metodo della M., che ha trovato applicazione in apposite scuole istituite in molti paesi, anche extraeuropei (USA, Canada, India e Giappone), è considerato uno dei principali esperimenti di "scuola nuova". Esso mira a fare della scuola non la casa per bambini, ma la casa dei bambini, ossia un ambiente adatto alla libera esplicazione della loro attività, onde la maestra non insegna propriamente, ma assiste individualmente i bambini, mentre spontaneamente si esercitano col materiale didattico, cui è data un'estrema importanza. I critici del metodo tuttavia sostengono che esso offre al bambino un materiale obbligato e predispone rigidamente, in nome della scienza, i procedimenti cui debbono attenersi maestri e bambini, riuscendo così in certo modo frustrata l'originaria sua ispirazione alla spontaneità e libertà.
