Venice – another world
Petrarch, the fourteenth-century Tuscan poet, called Venice a “mundus alter” or “another world,” and the city of canals really is different from other italian cities.
A bridge between East and West
Venice – Another Renaissance
Gentile Bellini, Processione in piazza San Marco (1496)
The Venetian Renaissance had a distinct character compared to the general Italian Renaissance elsewhere. The Republic of Venice was topographically distinct from the rest of the city-states of Renaissance Italy as a result of their geographic location, which isolated the city politically, economically and culturally, allowing the city the leisure to pursue the pleasures of art.
Giorgione, La tempesta, 1506-8. Olio su tela, 82 x 73 cm. Venezia, Gallerie dell’Accademia.
The Assumption by Titian
Titian, Assumption , 1516-18. Oil on panel, 6.9 x 3.6 m. Venice, Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, high altar.
Venice's Baroque Masterpiece
A votive temple dedicated to the Virgin Mary to celebrate the end of the Plague
Is it possible to discover Venice also through contemporary art?
How was Venice built?
The city of Venice is made up of 118 small islands connected by numerous canals and bridges. However, the buildings of Venice were not built directly on the islands… instead, they were built on wooden platforms that were supported by wooden piles driven into the ground.
Wooden piles emerging from the mud. The anaerobic environment under water makes sure the wood doesn't decay even after centuries under water.
Chapel
Octagonal shape
Central vane
Church's façade is embellished with 125 statues
Wooden foundations of Venice
Four gilded bronze horses, known as the Horses of Saint Mark , which are located above the main entrance and were brought to Venice from Constantinople in 1204.
The Romanesque façade from XI century
The interior of the domes, the vaults, and the upper walls were slowly covered with gold-ground mosaics depicting saints, prophets, and biblical scenes.
Venetian tonalism While Venetian painters knew about linear perspective and used the technique in their paintings, depth is just as often suggested by gradually shifting colors and the play of light and shadow.
Elegant spiral volutes
Torcello was born as a refuge for the Roman populations of the rich Altino, who fled from the invasions of the Huns in the 5th century. Once the danger passed, many of the Altinati returned to their city, but two centuries later, under pressure from the Lombards, they returned to the island and settled there. In their escape they also brought the relics of the first bishop of Altino, Saint Heliodorus, who became protector of the island. In this period Santa Maria Assunta basilica was built.
The problem was that Titian's work was completely devoid of the typical Byzantine two-dimensionality that was still so dear to the Venetians of the time.
SANTA MARIA ASSUNTA CATHEDRAL
We recommend starting from Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral. An inscription discovered on a wall of the Cathedral would support the hypothesis that the construction of the church dates back to 639 AD, thanks to Doge Maurizio, Military Master and Byzantine governor of Venetia et Histria, at the behest of the Exarch of Ravenna Isaac. The foundation of the Cathedral, which was dedicated to the Assumption, coincided with the transfer of the diocese of Altino to the island. The building was renovated into its current form around the year one thousand.
