England is a country within the United Kingdom (UK), which is a sovereign state made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

England is part of the United Kingdom, and the UK decided to leave the European Union after the Brexit referendum in 2016. This decision was driven by a desire to regain full sovereignty over laws, borders, and trade policies, among other factors. Although England is geographically in Europe, its political affiliation with the EU ended when the UK officially withdrew in 2020.

The English Channel is a narrow waterway—only about 33 km wide at the Strait of Dover—that connects the UK with mainland Europe and has long been a key route for trade, cultural exchange, and defense.

• William won and became King of England. This changed England’s history and brought in new ideas, laws, and culture from France.

• In 1215, King John of England was forced to sign the Magna Carta, a document that limited the power of the king.
• This was important because it gave people more rights and helped the idea of rule by law instead of the king having all the power.
