Chunk/Annotate the Passage

  • Chunk the passage into multiple sections.
  • After reading a section, stop and annotate what you read.
    • To annotate, mark important points such as key words that you recall from pre-reading the questions.
    • You could also summarize the "who" and the "what" of each chunk to help you remember the passage later

  • Before reading the passage, skip ahead to the questions.
  • Read the question, looking for key words to help you understand what to look for while you read.
  • DO NOT read the answer choices yet.

Eliminate Answer Choices

  • Begin by eliminating obviously incorrect answers, choices that have nothing to do with the passage.
  • Make sure you read the remaining choices carefully. Oftentimes, some answers are only partially true.
  • Always refer back to the text to eliminate any remaining options.
  • Hint: If you are still stuck between choices, go with your first instinct; don't leave the question blank.
  • Hint: If two answers are opposites, one of them is typically correct.
