EXPRESSING CONTRAST

What does that mean? We express contrast when we emphasize the fact that the second point in a sentence contradicts the first.

EXPRESSING CONTRAST

the connectors that we use to express contrast are:

-in spite of

-however

-even though

-whereas -yet

-but

-nevertheless

-while

- even if

-despite -still

- much as

-although

-though

-On the one hand/ on the other hand

EXPRESSING CONTRAST

These sentence connectors are used to emphasize the fact that the second point contradicts with the first. BUT HOWEVERNEVERTHELESSSTILL YET WHEREAS

EXPRESSING CONTRAST

"But" and "However" “but” and “however” are very similar though “however” gives more emphasis to the contrast and is more common on the beginning of a sentence

EXPRESSING CONTRAST

"Nevertheless", "Still" and "Yet"

EXPRESSING CONTRAST

While is a conjunction that is most commonly used with time, but it can also be used to mean 'despite the fact that' or 'although'.

"WHILE"

EX:While I made some mistakes in my driving exam, I still passed.

EXPRESSING CONTRAST

While and whereas can be used to mean 'but' or 'compared with the fact that', to compare two contradictory ideas.

"WHILE"and "WHEREAS"

EX:While/Whereas Ivan is very sociable, his brother is more reserved. My trip home was quick and easy, whereas/while my colleagues were delayed for hours.

EXPRESSING CONTRAST

We use them to connect contrasting ideas introducing a dependent clause Although Though Even if Even though

EXPRESSING CONTRAST

"Though" and "Although" “though” and “although” are similar with the only difference being the position. though- can be used in beginning/middle/end of a sentence although-can´t be used at the end of a sentence

EXPRESSING CONTRAST

"Even if" and "Even though" "Even though" means despite the fact that and is a more emphatic version of though and although. "Even if" means whether or not and has to do with the conditions that may apply.

EXPRESSING CONTRAST

"Much as" Much as is a more formal expression. It means 'although', 'despite how much' or 'no matter how much'.

EXPRESSING CONTRAST

We use them to contrast ideas. They must be followed by a noun phrase or an –ing form DESPITE IN SPITE OF

EXPRESSING CONTRAST

"On the one hand" and "On the other hand" "on the one hand" is used in contracts in contrast to "on the other hand" in the initial provisions, when the parties are presented and contrasted to each other

CONCLUSION

As you can see, connectors are useful in many situations and can transform your level of fluency in conversation. Now we know why we use connectors and how to use them to express ourselves. We hope you enjoyed our presentation and learned a little bit more about this topic.

EXAMPLES

ALTHOUGH : Although it rained a lot, we enjoyed our vacation. THOUGH: Maria didn´t receive a scholarship though she is an excellent student.
In this sense, while/whereas can come at the beginning of the sentence or between the two contradictory clauses.

EXAMPLES

Much as I enjoyed studying abroad, it was good to return home.

When you start learning a language, you begin by creating short phrases, for example “I like coffee”. The next step in the learning process is to link this phrase to another one, for example, “I like coffee and I like tea”. The word ‘and’ is what we call a connector, and it is one of the first connectors you learn.

EXAMPLES

NEVERTHELESS: There was little chance of success; nevertheless they decided to perform the surgery. STILL: He is rich. Still, he leads a miserable life. YET: Edison dropped out school at an early age, yet he became a famous inventor.

EXAMPLES

EVEN IF: Even if you take a taxi, you'll still miss your train. EVEN THOUGH: Even though the weather was bad, the ship departed.

EXAMPLES

HOWEVER : Katty couldn't cash her paycheck. However, she managed to buy a new TV set. BUT: Oscar had a ticket, but he didn´t go to the game

EXAMPLES

IN SPITE OF: In spite of being a millionaire, he is very mean. DESPITE: Despite the doctor´s advice, he played football last week.

EXAMPLES

On the one hand smokers should have the right to smoke if they want to, but on the other hand non-smokers should have the right to breathe smoke-free air. On the one hand I love the freedom of being single, but on the other hand the idea of being married and having a family is very attractive.
