Subprime crisis
The subprime crisis was a financial crisis that broke out in the United States in 2007-2008, with global repercussions. It was related to the collapse of the housing market and the collapse of financial securities based on high-risk mortgage loans (the "subprimes"). Here's a detailed explanation:
What happened
Banks granted these loans with attractive initial interest rates, often variable. The risk was that the borrowers might not be able to repay over the long term, but the banks were confident in the continuous rise of real estate prices. But in 2008 real estate prices began to fall. Many people who had taken subprime loans saw the value of their homes decline, and some could no longer repay their loans (especially due to rising interest rates). This led to a high default rate on loans.
Consequences and impacts
Banks and financial institutions suffered massive losses, leading to a global recession. Confidence in financial markets was severely shaken. Due to the crisis, the global economy plunged into a recession, with rising unemployment, falling consumption, and a contraction of economic activity.
Who did what ?
Short Term The Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) was introduced, a $700 billion bailout plan to purchase toxic assets held by banks Middle term A major financial reform aimed at preventing a repeat of the crisis. This law strengthened regulation of financial institutions, imposed restrictions on complex financial products, and created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to protect consumers from abusive banking practices. Long term Many reforms were applied to derivatives markets and securitization to limit the risks associated with these financial instruments. For example, transparency in derivatives markets was increased, and transactions must go through central counterparties to ensure their regularity and safety.
