Social Reproduction

We know that social reproduction refers to the school's preference to favor middle/upper-class cultural capital components. A concern that was brought up during my interview, was how can this school cater to the widley diverse population.

While assisting a Faculty meeting, Muslim students (who have their club) enlightened faculty members about the upcoming religous month of Ramadan. Something that didn;t have the school awareness years prior. Students gave background, and the details to Ramadan and how they could best support students who are particaping in Ramadan.

Throughout the years, Westview has embedded cultural knowledge from all the populations at this school. I would say that Clubs have a huge influence in advocating and educating Westviews of their cultural backrounds. It is really important that schools begin to leave behind these tradiontal practices, and embed cirricula that represent student population

Social Capital

At Westview High School

Because Westview is known for their academic enrichment and rigor. This school provides a range of resources and support for students who want to pursue higher education. - An important component of Social Capital is the use of Networking and building relationships within your community

An example:Students are highly encouraged to register for the class known as Senior Inquiry. This course is provided by PSU. Professors teach this class alongside high school teachers. My sister who is in that class currently has gotten the opportunity to get to know the professor. This is her opportunity to get familir with higer education as she is a First-Generation student

2023-24 ESSA Accountability Report

Cultural Capital

In Classroom settings

A way I like to think about this form of capital is what people often refer too "street" smart. People who take the initiative to problem solve and adapt to different settings. We know that this form of capital involves Kowledge/skills and cultural norms.

An Example:In observing an AVID classroom, students were given timesses for the incoming school year. While I was working with minority students, we noticed that most of the teachers' attention was on another student for most of the class time. Students grew frustrated because they had been asking for assistance for quite some. When they saw they weren't going to get the help they needed, they took the initiative to get up and ask questions to another AVID teacher in the building. It may seem this isn't a big deal, but students did share their experiences. They aren't given the equal amount of one-on-one time as other students. So a lot of the times they have to find support elsewhere.

Reflection

Wrapping up this course and how these assignments were designed, right off the bat, I have realized that I will stay away from any sort of administration position. Meaningful work is one when you are directly involved with the students. I say this due to what I was able to see firsthand with the Mentor I had during this practicum. I understand why priorities may change, which is why I don't think I would ever be able to handle a position like that. I am glad that I got to go back to my high school, I have seen how this school has grown in many ways. There are certain areas where the outcomes are far from the goal. But, I do believe in the coming years, we will see positive change. Notably, this school isn't perfect. But this school has amazing faculty that truly care for their students.
