The People's hero

Read the text and give some information about the origins of this superhero.

Superman's first appearance in 1938 showed him combating social issues. Delivering justice, protecting family and stopping corruption, Superman represented the newly expanded New Deal state. He had an infallible moral compass and an unquenchable desire to make the world a safer and fairer place. At a time when President Franklin D. Roosevelt made bold claims of leadership and executive power, Superman mirrored the benefits for American society, embodying the palpable determination of an administration calling for “action, and action now.” Admonishing the greed and selfishness of the Roaring Twenties, the Roosevelt administration swiftly enacted laws and executive orders aimed at protecting and assisting those most vulnerable in society. In the pages of the comics, Superman did the same. Stories like “The Blakely Mine Disaster” and “Superman in the Slums” highlighted issues surrounding the right of the worker to a safe working environment and the need for adequate housing.

This hero appeared in 1938 while Franklin D. Roosevelt was the president. He enacted laws in order to eradicate the Great Depression and "combat social issues".

Do some researches about President Franklin Roosevelt and The New Deal.

Compare Superman and Roosevelt. Explain how this superhero illustrates the link between fiction and reality.

Like president Roosevelt, he worked for the common good as a social crusader. Both used their determination and power to act and protect vulnerable people from corruption and greed.

Focus on a female spy

Photo of Black Widow and Captain America in The Avengers

Describe the two characters on the poster.

The poster shows Black Widow, a superhero from the movie The Avengers. She wears a uniform and holds a gun in each hand. She looks self-confident, fearless and pitiless. She is an impressive leading character who will probably be important in the story. Captain America’s patriotic outfit and shield symbolize the military power of America. He is standing in the background while Black Widow is standing in the foreground.

pity+less => pitiless fear+ less => fearless The suffix -less means without and transforms the noun into an adjective.

Explain the goal of the poster.

This poster aims at presenting Black Widow as an intelligent, strong and versatile woman. Females are presented as the equals of male spies. Showing her in the foreground enhances women's empowerment. Even if she is a fictional character, she defends female rights.

Focus on a female spy

Read the article and discover the real female spy Marvel took its inspiration from. Complete the information.

Martha Peterson, known as Marti to her friends, was a young, newly married bride who went with her CIA-employed husband to Laos. After he was killed, Peterson decided to honor his memory and his contribution by becoming an agent herself. The Widow Spy documented Peterson's early career in Moscow during the Cold War. Marti went to work for the CIA on July 3rd, 1973. Performing dead drops. Car tosses. Taking covert pictures with miniature cameras. She was learning to be a spy. She arrived in Moscow in November 1975, and immediately was assigned the task of meeting, through dead drops, the most significant agent being handled by Moscow Station from 1975 to 1977. During the day, she worked as a diplomat in the U.S. Embassy. At night, on weekends and during her lunch breaks, she would report to the CIA station in the same building to do her work as an operative. Marti did the job with the help of experts in the CIA's office. The Widow Spy tells of her night excursions into the dark streets of Moscow, alone. The Widow Spy ended with her arrest by the KGB in July 1977.

Blacks' power

Read the article and draw a parallel between past and present social ills.

Last summer, when images of the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville circulated on social media, Lee responded with a powerful statement of his own. "Bigotry and racism are among the deadliest social ills plaguing the world today," he wrote. "As true today as it was in 1968." The words he shared originally appeared in Stan's Soapbox, a column he wrote for Marvel that was published in the same year Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated. From The Fantastic Four to the X-Men, his heroes were outsiders who fight for a better society - no surprise given they were created during the height of the civil rights movement. X-Men has often been praised for its portrayal of mutant oppression and its reflection of the fight for civil rights. Fans have even compared Professor Xavier and Magneto's differing views to King and Malcolm X's respective ideologies. "I always felt the X-Men, in a subtle way, often touched upon the subject of racism and inequality," Lee told the Washington Post in 2016. Alongside his long-time collaborator Jack Kirby, Lee also created Black Panther, the first black superhero to appear in comics. This year's film version was praised for providing the representation many black audiences had been craving for, from children seeing what they could grow up to be, to women witnessing their hair and skin tones being celebrated on screen. Other fans praised the comic and film for its portrayal of fictional African nation Wakanda as the most technologically advanced country in the world. Black Panther is now Marvel Studios' most successful release at the box office and has been tipped to win awards at next year's Oscars.

The events that took place in 2017 in Charlottesville are reminiscent of the acts of racism in the 1960s. Indeed, Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated in 1968.
