here comes the hammer

  • Goal: compare voluntary reaction times to involuntary response (reflex)times

reflex

  • Tools needed: EKG leads, reflex hammer, acceleration sensor, labquest mini box, EKG pads, Graphical Analysis software

Overview of Lab

  • You will test your voluntary reaction times
  • Work in pairs (tester and subject)
  • Apply EKG leads to subject
  • Subject should face away from tester
  • Tester will hit the hammer on the lab table
  • When the subject hears the hammer, they should kick their lower leg
  • Repeat 5-10 times
  • Save the data!!!

Part 1 of lab

  • You will test your reflex times (involuntary)
  • Tester will hit the subject’s patellar tendon
  • Subject should keep leg relaxed - allow the reflex to occur (don’t force it and don’t fight it)
  • Repeat 5-10 times
  • Save the data
When you’re finished, switch roles & repeat parts 1 and 2 MAKE SURE YOU SAVE ALL DATA!!!

Part 2 of lab

Tutorial

  • Once you’ve collected all data, you will analyze it and record it on the handout provided
  • All results will be shared and we’ll discuss class trends

ANALYSIS

Next, you’ll practice some basic data analysis on a data set provided in step 6

  • Open the data set (step 6)
  • Sort by age (use the embedded video if you need help)
  • Decide how you want to group the data
  • For each data set,
  • Highlight outliers in yellow
  • Calculate the mean reaction time & reflex time
  • Calculate the range for the reaction times & reflex times
  • Create a visual representation of the means (graph) - make sure all axes are labeled (if you want/need to make more than one, you can!)
  • Create a figure legend (title) below the figure that describes any trends you see in the data.
