L'euro
La zone euro a été créée en 1999 par 11 des 15 pays que l'UE comptait alors, rejoints par la Grèce en 2001, la Slovénie en 2007, Chypre et Malte en 2008, la Slovaquie en 2009, l'Estonie en 2011, la Lettonie en 2014, la Lituanie en 2015 et la Croatie en 2023. La Suède et le Danemark ont décidé lors de référendums qu'ils n'adoptaient pas l'euro pour l'instant .

Les pays candidats à l'entrée dans la zone euro doivent respecter les critères dits "de Maastricht". Ces critères imposent :- la maîtrise de l'inflation ;- une dette publique inférieure à 60% du produit intérieur brut (PIB) ;- un déficit public de 3% du PIB maximum ;- la convergence des taux d'intérêt ; - la stabilité du taux de change, critère devenu obsolète avec le passage à l'euro.Les membres de l'union économique et monétaire (UEM) doivent continuer à respecter ces critères une fois entrés dans la zone euro, sous peine d’avertissement puis de sanction.

23 juin 2016 : les Britanniques votent en faveur du Brexit 29 mars 2017 : le Royaume-Uni active l'art. 50 du traité sur l'UE. Les négociations en vue du retrait peuvent démarrer 1er février 2020 : le Royaume-Uni quitte l'UE. Débute une période de transition 1er janvier 2021 : le Royaume-Uni sort du marché unique et de l'union douanière. Tous les sujets ne sont pas pour autant reglés 27 février 2023 : le cadre de Windsor et le reglement de la frontière nord irlandaise
Le protocole veille à éviter la mise en place d'une frontière physique sur l'île d'Irlande à la suite du retrait du Royaume-Uni de l'UE. Dans le cadre de Windsor, l'UE et le Royaume-Uni se sont mis d'accord sur de nouvelles dispositions visant à résoudre des problèmes pratiques, par exemple pour les marchandises qui circulent de la Grande-Bretagne vers l'Irlande du Nord, dans l'intérêt des citoyens et des entreprises d'Irlande du Nord.
