E' la cosiddetta musica "colta", quella creata dai grandi compositori del passato. può essere eseguita sia da un'orchestra sia da pochi strumenti.

Fa parte della tradizione culturale di un popolo e spesso è stata tramandata oralmente. Utilizza strumenti tipicidivewrsi dai classici strumenti dell'orchestra.

Costituisce la colonna sonora di film o cartoni animati e ha lo scopo di accompagnare le immagini e amplificarne l'impatto comunicativo.
