Colorectal Pursuit

Family history and colorectal cancer

Prevention

Know your family history
  • A family history of colorectal cancer puts you at an increased risk for the disease.
  • A family history is considered to be an immediate family member (parent, brother or sister) or multiple family members with colorectal cancer or polyps.
  • If you have a family history, you may need to be screened at age 40, or 10 years before the youngest case in your immediate family, whichever is earlier.
  • Talk to your family about their health history!
Uh oh! You skipped your colonoscopy. Go back three spaces.

How to talk to your doctor about screening

Latest recommendations encourage average-risk individuals to begin screening at age 45 years. High-risk individuals, such as those with family history, symptoms and certain lifestyles, should screen earlier.

You reduced your meat consumption. Move forward three spaces.

Great job!

Diets high in red meat have been linked to colorectal cancer. Processed meats should be avoided if possible. These meats include hot dogs, ham, bacon, and sausage. Cancer risk increases even with low consumption.

You exercised for 30 minutes per day this week. Move forward three spaces.

Great job!

Increasing your physical activity can reduce your risk of developing colorectal cancer by 30 to 40 percent. 30 to 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day is needed to protect against colorectal cancer.

Uh oh! You still haven't quit smoking. Go back two spaces.

Know the signs, symptoms, and risk factors

Did you know?

The small intestine is about four times longer than the large intestine, but it’s called “small” because it has a narrower diameter! Meanwhile, the large intestine is shorter but wider, which helps it absorb water and form solid waste.

Did you know?

Your gut and brain are connected

The gut is called the “second brain” because it produces 95% of your body’s serotonin, which affects mood and digestion.

Did you know?

Farting is totally normal!

The average person passes 10-20 farts per day—it’s just gas from digestion and gut bacteria at work!
