THE BASICS OF COMPUTING

WHAT IS THE OPERATING SYSTEM?

An operating system is a fundamental programme that manages the computer hardware and enables applications to run. In other words, it is like a ‘mediator’ between the user and the computer. Without an operating system, it would not be possible to run the computer.

MAIN FUNCTIONS:

  • Resource management: controls and coordinates the use of resources such as memory, CPU and input devices (such as keyboard and mouse).
  • Execution of programmes: starts and manages the programmes we use.
  • User interface: provides a way to interact with the computer, such as through windows, icons and commands.Examples of operating systems are Windows, macOS and Linux.

EXAMPLES OF OPERATING SYSTEMS:

There are many operating systems, such as Windows, or macOS and Linux.tv. Each computer has its own operating system . Here are some examples on the left.
