What are the reasons for the over-representation of men in prison ?

LALANNE Clarisse and PRIOUL Anaëlle
Some statistics

I Gender socialization

Idea of no-violent women Women are perceived as naturally gentle and peaceful. When they commit a violent crime, it is often explained by a mental disorder rather than rational criminal intent. By demanding equality with men, women would also be adopting male behavior, including violence.

Idea of violent men Boys are taught that they don't need to control themselves, that they can hurt others without consequences. We accept the dogma that men are naturally more criminal than women. Male violence is rational, because it is part of a defensive logic.

II Economic disparities

Another explanation may be financial pressure, which sometimes drives people to deal and commit crimes for money. Unemployment, job insecurity and low wages push some people to look for quick solutions to support their families. The 31 to 45 age group accounts for over 17% of the prison population. This period corresponds to the most active years of a person's working life, exposing them more to situations that could lead to crime. Older individuals are less likely to commit crimes due to a more stable lifestyle.

III Legal and institutional aspects

According to the World Prison Brief, 2.1 million people were incarcerated in the U.S. in 2018. In the UK, it was 83,000, and in Canada, it was 41,000. of these figures : In the US 9.8% are women, in the UK 4.6% and in Canada 5.6%. The percentage of women in prison is increasing, but over 90% of prisoners are men.

Men are judged more harshly than women. They more easily receive long sentences, while women are more likely to avoid charges and convictions, and are 2 times more likely to avoid incarceration in the event of conviction. Women are therefore placed in “softer” institutions, depending on the context, such as rehabilitation centers, care systems or psychiatric hospitals.
