GUATEMALA
Guatemala, a Central American country south of Mexico, boasts volcanoes, tropical forests, and ancient Mayan sites. The capital, Guatemala City, boasts the imposing National Palace of Culture and the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. Antigua Guatemala, west of the capital, contains preserved Spanish colonial buildings. Lake Atitlán, formed in a massive volcanic crater, is surrounded by coffee fields and villages.

Gastronomy
Guatemalan art blends indigenous and mestizo traditions.Textiles, ceramics, naive painting, and wood carving are highly representative. The marimba is the national instrument and is played at festivals and celebrations. There is also a great deal of contemporary art.
Based on corn, beans, chili, tomatoes, and local herbs. Typical dishes: pepian, kak'ik, tamales, jocón, and rellenitos. Traditional drinks such as atol and fruit punch. Food is an essential part of every family or religious celebration.

Mayan origin: advanced civilization in astronomy, writing, and architecture.The Spanish conquest arrived in 1524. Guatemala achieved its independence in 1821. It experienced an armed conflict that lasted more than 30 years (1960–1996). Today it seeks to preserve its culture and advance as a democratic nation
The family is the center of social life. Respect for parents and elders is valued. Children are taught to be kind, hardworking, and responsible. Social norms promote respect and solidarity.
National Symbols
Flag: blue and white, with the coat of arms in the center. Coat of arms: includes the quetzal, crossed rifles, a scroll, and a laurel wreath. National bird: the quetzal, symbol of freedom. National flower: Monja Blanca. National tree: the ceiba tree.
The official language is Spanish. Guatemala also recognizes 22 Mayan languages, in addition to Xinca and Garifuna. Many indigenous communities maintain their native language.
