Nombre de mariages : 5 Age de premier mariage : 13 ans Elle tient son nom Baker de son deuxième mari . Pendant la seconde guerre mondiale :engagement dans la Résistance puis dans l'armée de l'Air. 1946 : la médaille de la Résistance française. 1960 : engagement pour la cause raciste 1961 : légion d'honneur et la croix de guerre pour son engagement dans la résistance. Elle utilise ensuite sa grande popularité au service de la lutte contre le racisme et pour l'émancipation des Noirs.
