Malcom Knowles' Principles of Andragogy

Andragogy Vs. Predagogy

Teaching Strategies

Andragogy Strategies

Andragogy Vs. Pedagogy.

1. Andragogy is for the adult learner 2. Andragogy is using life experiences 3. Andragogy uses instrisic motivation 4. Andragogy is Self-directed (Nebel, n.d.).

Andgragogy
Pedagogy
  1. Pedagogy is for children
  2. The learner is reliant on the teacher
  3. content centered
  4. Limited life experiences (Nebel, n.d.).

Malcom Knowle's is known as an Adult Learning theorist. He explains the difference between adult and child learning.

Teaching Strategies

  1. Collaborating can help be influencial for
adult learners. This may look like pairing learners up with more experiences learners. 2. Teaching techniques and problem solving skills that are meaningful to the learner. This will help the learner build connections to what they are learning. 3 It is also important to include choice. When learners are given choices they tend to be more motivated, engaged, and interested in what they are learnng. 4. Build on the learners previous knowledge. Adult learners want to use what they already know for foundation of their learning (Anders, 2023).This also helps build understanding of new material .

Two Andragogical strategies to engage adult learners

  1. Collaborative Learning: This process allows
sthe students to work together together in small groups to problem-solve. 2. Build on prior experiences: This process is using previous student knowledge and building upon it. This allows for the student to make connections and retain information easier. This may include teaching what is relevant to the individual student (ReThinkEd Team, 2017). This will increase engagement.
The 6 principles of Andragogy
Instructional Strategies
  1. Help learners understand why they are learning
  2. Have a choice in what the learners are learning
  3. Making connections to past learning experience
  4. Learners do best through motivation
  5. Learners use real-world problems to better understand
  6. Learners learn best with content that is relevant to the learners (Feder, 2021).
  1. Need to know
  2. Self-Concept
  3. Learner's previous experience
  4. Readiness to learn
  5. Orientation to learning
  6. Intrinsic motivation to learn

Instructional coaches must understand that teachers/educators already come with their own experiences, insights, and learning styles to the classroom. Instructional specialists should then collaborate with the teachers/educators to align their professional goals with their teaching methods for student success.
