What is matter?
Matter is EVERYTHING around us that takes up space (has a VOLUME) and has a MASS: air, water, rocks, and even people are examples of matter. The GENERAL TWO PROPERTIES of matter are: - The mass of an object is the amount of material that makes up the object. A bowling ball, for example, has more mass than a beach ball. - And the volume: which is the space that the object occupies.
Specific Properties
Matter has mass and volume as general properties. Matter also has other properties that makes one different from another. Specific properties such as: colour, hardness, elasticity, strength, transparency, conductivity, taste, magnetism, and solubility.
Pure substances and mixtures
Practice
Pure substances, like salt, are composed of a single substance. If it composed of various substances, it’s called a mixture. When we can distinguish the components it is a heterogenous mixture. When we can´t distinguish the components it is a homogenous mixture

Changes in matter
Matter can suffer a physical change when no new substances are created. If new substances are created, we call it a chemical change. A change is reversible if matter can return to its original state. If not, the change is irreversible. Some examples are...
MATERIALS
We obtain natural materials directly from nature, like the wood from a tree. From these natural materials, we can apply processes to make man-made materials, like heating sand to make glass. To choose a material, we consider the properties that are most suitable for its use. We must reduce, reuse, repair, and recycle materials to protect the environment.
