Once you finish this course, you will:

• Explain the requirements for maintaining accurate records of duty status (logs) and demonstrate the ability to present logs for the current day and the previous seven days to enforcement officials, ensuring compliance with hours-of-service regulations.
• Identify when they qualify for exemptions, such as the short-haul exception, and understand the conditions under which they must transition from paper logs to Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), ensuring adherence to regulatory standards.

Introduction

Nearly all commercial drivers are required to maintain specific records to demonstrate that they are adhering to the hours-of-service regulations. For the majority of drivers, this involves utilizing a standard record of duty status, commonly referred to as a log, which can be either a traditional paper log or an Electronic Logging Device (ELD).

Summary

As a professional driver, make it a habit to maintain a daily log. Always be prepared to present your current log along with the logs from the past seven days to an officer if requested. If you have any exemptions, be ready to clarify the details. Use an ELD for logging, or at the very least, be aware of when you might need to transition to one.
