What are natural disasters?
natural disasters are:
- A natural disaster is an extreme event that causes serious damage. They can come from land, the ocean, or the atmosphere. Some of the most dangerous types include earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, and floods.
Types of disasters
types of natural disasters
- Natural disasters can be classified as geological, meteorological, hydrological and biological. Each of them has different origins.
Geological Disasters
Earthquakes
- What are they? Vibrations of the Earth's crust caused by the movement of tectonic plates.
- Why does this happen? They occur due to the accumulation of tension in geological faults and the positioning of the plates.
- They cause destruction of infrastructure, deaths and injuries and severe economic impact.
Tsunamis
- What are they? Giant waves caused by earthquakes, submarines or volcanic eruptions in the ocean. ~
- Why does this happen? The displacement of large volumes of water generates waves that spread quickly.
- They cause coastal flooding, destruction of cities and towns and a high number of deaths.
Meteorological Disasters
Hurricanes
- What are they? Intense tropical storms with winds exceeding 119 km/h.
- Why does this happen? They form over warm oceans, where evaporating water creates large areas of low pressure.
- They cause flooding and landslides, destruction of homes and infrastructure, and deaths and displacement of populations.
Tornadoes
- What are they? Columns of rotating air that extend from the cloud to the ground.
- Why does this happen? They are created when masses of hot and cold air collide.
- They cause destruction of buildings, risks of objects thrown by the wind and high death rates in affected areas.
Hydrological Disasters
Floods
- What are they? Excessive accumulation of water that submerges inhabited areas.
- Why does this happen? Caused by heavy rains, dam breaks or tsunamis.
- They cause destruction of cities and crops, displacement of the population and significant deaths.
Landslides
- What are they? Sudden movements of snow, earth or rocks on slopes.
- Why do they happen? Caused by heavy rain, earthquakes or snowfall.
- They cause burying of houses and roads, deaths and injuries and isolation of communities.
Worst natural disasters

- Over the past ten years, several natural disasters have resulted in tragic loss of life.

How to reduce your impact
Preventions
- Natural disasters are powerful events that impact lives, economies and the environment. Although they cannot be prevented, their impact can be reduced through prevention and monitoring.
