Superlative adjectives

empezar

Introduction to Superlatives Superlatives are a form of adjectives used to indicate the highest or lowest degree of a quality within a group. They are used to express that something or someone has a characteristic in its most extreme form. They are used when comparing more than two elements. Example: "The elephant is the biggest animal in the zoo."
Comparatives vs. Superlatives Comparatives: Used to compare two things. Example: "A dog is bigger than a cat." Structure: Subject + verb to be + comparative adjective + than + object "A dog" (subject) "is" (verb to be) "bigger" (comparative adjective) "than" (comparison word) "a cat" (object) Superlatives: Used to express the highest degree of a quality within a group. Example: "The dog is the biggest animal in my house." Structure: Subject + verb to be + the + superlative adjective + complement "The dog" (subject) "is" (verb to be) "the biggest" (superlative adjective) "animal in my house" (complement)
Grammar Rules *Most adjectives: Add "-est" to the end of the adjective. Example: tall → the tallest *Adjectives ending in "y": Change "y" to "i" and add "-est". Example: happy → the happiest *Adjectives ending in consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC): Double the last consonant and add "-est". Example: big → the biggest *Long adjectives (two or more syllables): Use "the most" before the adjective. Example: intelligent → the most intelligent Irregular adjectives: Good → the best Bad → the worst Far → the farthest/the furthest *Always use "the" before superlatives! Example: "He is the tallest student in the class."
