Il verbo è la parte variabile del discorso che indica, collocandola nel tempo, un’azione compiuta o subita dal soggetto, oppure uno stato, un modo di essere, in una parola un processo collocato nella dimensione temporale.

Per questo motivo, e per la ricchezza delle informazioni che comunica, il verbo ha un ruolo fondamentale nel meccanismo della frase (non a caso “verbo” deriva dal latino verbum, che significa «parola»: è la parola per eccellenza). La nostra vita è intessuta di azioni e di sentimenti, che trovano proprio nei verbi lo strumento di espressione privilegiato.
