Who is Hilary?
Re- Introducing myself :)
I became somebody that my residents genuinely wanted to talk to. From advice about school, to hairstyles, to boys, they felt comfortable coming and knocking on my door. I have had a couple of residents tell me if they hear The Real Housewives of Atlanta playing, they know I'm home.
What did I accomplish that I am proud of?
Something I did not know about myself before being an RA, is that I genuinely care about other people's success, and that I love giving my knowledge to other people.
WHAT DID I LEARN ABOUT MYSELF?
2. I would do "miniature" events outside of my mandatory
1. I would make myself more visible to my residents, go to the cafe more...
WHAT WOULD I DO DIFFERENTLY?
How is your community? How did your programs help?
Community
I want to return because I enjoy being a mentor to the girls on my hall, and this job has taught me that it is better to take the time to actually get to know people in a position of authority. This is something I can take into the healthcare field with me, taking the time to know my patients, will make them feel more comfortable and receptive of me as their caregiver.
WHY DO YOU WANT TO RETURN?
WHEN DID YOU SET A GOAL & MEET IT?
I have been really big on saving my money. Last year December 2021 I needed a new car, and I wanted to buy it before the new year. I was very strict on myself .I was not eating out, I was not making unnecessary purchases, I made separated my needs from my wants, and I made sure I was depositing a certain amount into my savings every week. I worked 2 jobs the month of December, and on December 29th, 2021 I saved up $6,000 to get my a 2015 Nissan Altima, and I named her Champagne.
DUTY PAPERWORK COMPLETION:
Most nights were quiet duty nights, and I would always forget the duty log, but on nights that something happened, I would remember to do the log.
RESPONDING TO EMAILS:
I am very good about responding to emails, I usually respond to them as soon as I get them, or atleast in the same day.
COMPLETING PAPERWORK:
I am very good about turning in assignments and paperwork on time.
PUNCTUALITY:
I can't be on time to save my life. I never turn in assignments late, but physically I always underestimate how long it will take me to get ready and get somewhere.
HOW WOULD I RATE MY ADMINISTRATIVE SKILL SET?
How is your community? How did your programs help?
Community
One thing my residents really enjoyed that I did was bring donuts. I want to keep track of their exam schedules and bring treats for them to come get after their test. Even the pre-reqs for nursing school is hard, and I want them to feel like somebody understands that.
HOW WILL I CREATE A POSITIVE FLOOR COMMUNITY?
Community is a sense and place of feeling like you belong.
RESPECT:
COMMUNICATION:
The only way to understand another person's point or stance without healthy communication skills.
HONESTY:
Your word means everything, you can never build a real bond with somebody on dishonesty.
WHAT IS COMMUNITY? 3 COMPONENTS ESSENTIAL TO CREATING & MAINTAINING RELATIONSHIPS?
Respects goes both ways, and you should always treat others as you want to be treated.
2 PROGRAMS THIS SEMESTER
VS
I personally made a kahoot for their first anatomy test, based on my old notes from the same material. I also shared SI notes that helped me alot, and I had multiple people come back and tell me it was very beneficial to them.
There were trivia questions that had to be answered before they got the chance to pie an RA, but this event was more tailored to help building the community aspect of the residents.

What have I dealt with? When have I encountered diversity?
Crisis, Diversity, Life on the floor
MY ROLE IN A CRISIS, AND MY FOLLOW UP
Thankfully there were not any real "crisis" on my floor, ofcourse we had plenty of the usual room disagreements, especially with a hallway with nothing but girls. However, there was a situation that opened my eyes to my impact as an RA. One night there was a party being thrown on my floor. I was not the RA on duty so I knew nothing about it until the fire alarm went off, and I saw the police at the end of the hall. Once I got outside 3 girls rushed up to me crying and panicking worrying about their scholarships, their position on the cheer team, going to jail. The girls understood that they were in the wrong, they were just looking for somebody with some compassion to explain to them what exactly was going to happen next and ease their mind. This helped my build a relationship with one of those girls, because I could share stories and a my experience with her about how we're at the age where we have to constantly protect and work towards our people, and we cannot hang around people who may hinder or put you in positions where you may get in trouble, seeing as she was the only athlete in the room.
Meeting JP, I learned the truth about arranged marriages, and about daughters growing up in cultures where they must act accordingly to keep up the status of the family's last name. This taught me why the college experience is so. different and special for everyone, because we are all here for different reasons, and many people are experiencing things for the first time. This coming semester I want all my programs to be based on something everybody can enjoy and relate to.
DIVERSITY THIS YEAR
What is teamwork? What advice do I have as a returner?
Teamwork...
I feel like the best way to create a positive staff community at any job, is to not speak bad about one of your coworkers to another coworker. This is something I practice now and will continue to practice, if I feel like whoever I am working with at the moment is not pulling their weight, or I feel like a situation was not handled properly. I always just bring it to Brianna, as my supervisor, to be handled the right way.
HOW WILL I CREATE A POSITIVE STAFF COMMUNITY?
Same rules apply to maintaing positive relationships!!
RESPECT:
COMMUNICATION:
We all are extremely busy and must communicate any scheduling issues we may have ahead of time, to make sure everything is always covered.
HONESTY:
Especially at this job, which is based on team work. If you say you are going to do something, DO IT.
WHAT SKILLS ARE IMPORTANT TO A SUCCESSFUL TEAM? HOW WILL I CONTRIBUTE TO THE ENVIRONMENT?
Respects goes both ways, and you should always treat others as you want to be treated.
As a returner, I want to give advice to any new comers to the team we may have. I also would want to help out housing in anyway that I can because I know understand all the work it takes in keeping housing and everything that goes along with it running.
HOW WILL I TAKE LEADERSHIP AS A RETURNER?
HOW DO I CURRENTLY ASSIST MY SUPERVISOR?
I currently assist my supervisor by simply, doing what I am supposed to do the correct way, and turning in paperwork on time. Housing needs to be kept updated and this is done with our duty logs and incident reports. Which one thing I plan on working on this semester is submitted my duty log as soon as I wake up the next morning.
How will I be a role model? What is expected of me?
How being a returner is different
Genuinely interacting with the residents. I feel like this makes your job 100X easier. Especially when you have to act in a position of authority, and remind your residents of the rules. This makes your residents respect you more, and they understand this is just you doing your job vs. them pushing back and giving attitude.
WHAT BEHAVIORS WILL I MODEL TO NEW STAFF?
I know that as a returner, I will be expected to be in a leadership role, and be expected to know how to handle situations as I have now had training and experience.
HOW WILL MY EXPECTATIONS CHANGE?
This year I am excited about my programs. I try challenging myself everytime by making programs that are different from the usual and making my programs something that people want to come to and will genuinly enjoy.
WHAT AM I EXCITED ABOUT? HOW WILL I MAKE IT CHALLENGING?
HOW WILL I IMPROVE?
VS
I will definitely improve myself by trying to be on time, 90% of the time I am always the last one to make it to a meeting.
There were trivia questions that had to be answered before they got the chance to pie an RA, but this event was more tailored to help building the community aspect of the residents.
ADMINISTRATIVELY:
PROGRAMMING/COMMUNITY
My LLC? Do I have any other responsibilities?
Nuts & Bolts
One thing I found out this year is that alot of my residents do not know how to study, so as a hall full of nursing majors, I want to enocurage them to take tips from eachother, because they may have a form of studying that you have never tried before that suits your style of learning better.
HOW WILL I DEVELOP MY LLC?
I prefer living in Palmetto, I would probably cry and throw a fit if I was told I have to live in Mag.
IF I NEED TO MOVE?
I will not have any new time commitments, same routine as this past semester.
ANY NEW TIME COMMITMENTS?
I do not plan on doing any internships or student teaching this semester?
ANY INTERNSHIPS / STUDENT TEACHING?
I work as a to-go server at Firebirds in Greenville.
ANY OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES WHILE EMPLOYED AS AN RA?
THANKS!
