WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT?

INFO

A Smart City is an urban area that harnesses technology, data and innovation to enhance the quality of life of its residents, improve sustainability and optimise urban services. It integrates information and communication technologies (ICT), human and social capital and governance strategies to create efficient, green and inclusive communities.

Why are smart cities important?

Efficient resource management ⚡ More efficient governance and public services 🏛️

Economic growth and innovation 💰 Improved quality of life 🏡

Activity: interactive discussion

In many cities around the world, waste management is a growing problem. Landfills are overflowing, plastic pollution is increasing and recycling systems are often inefficient. This leads to environmental degradation, health risks and wasted resources. Sustainable development aims to tackle this problem by promoting responsible consumption, waste reduction and circular economy models. However, many communities struggle to implement effective waste management solutions due to a lack of awareness, infrastructure and government support.

A COMMUNITY-BASED PROJECT 🌍💡

The community plays a key role in the success of smart cities. A city cannot be truly ‘smart’ without active citizen participation, collaboration and inclusiveness. First of all, participatory governance allows citizens to vote on city projects, budgets and development plans and provide feedback on city policies and services. Smart cities are based on the co-creation of smart solutions, where local communities can co-develop tailor-made technological solutions in collaboration with city authorities and technology companies to solve real-world problems. Smart cities also promote social inclusion through public spaces, community centres and cultural programmes, strengthening social connections and well-being. ❤️

What about energy saving?

The Energy Conservation Act (EC Act), enacted in 2001, aims to reduce India's energy intensity. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) was established on 1 March 2002 to implement the Act.

  • The law stipulates that: Standards and labels for household appliancesEnergy-saving building codes (ECBC) for commercial buildingsEnergy standards for energy-intensive industriesIn addition, the document directs central and state governments to promote energy efficiency in all sectors. The 2010 amendment introduced:Energy savings certificates for consumers who use less energy than the prescribed norms.Compulsory purchase of certificates for those who exceed the normsEvaluation of energy consumption per metric tonne of oil equivalentApplicability of ECBC to buildings with a load of 100 kW / a demand of 120 kVA

The Ministry of Energy and BEE launched several energy efficiency programmes for lighting, buildings, appliances, agriculture, municipalities, SMEs and industries. During the 11th Plan (2007-2012), these efforts resulted in an avoided generation capacity of 10,836 MW, exceeding the target of 10,000 MW..

Ways to engage students in learning about smart cities - Notes for teachers

Practical projects and research 📊TTeachers should assign students the task of developing a smart city proposal for their community, encouraging research on local urban challenges.

Learning and classroom discussions 🏫 Teachers should prepare lesson plans based on phenomena, which include real-world examples (e.g. Singapore) and discuss the six key dimensions of smart cities.

Team game: ‘Energy Efficiency Challenge

Objective:Teams (3-5 members each) will analyse and suggest ways to improve energy savings in a simulated or real environment (home, office, school or industry).

00:00

Each team chooses or is assigned a location (e.g. a school, an office, a factory or a house).).

Brainstorm and list at least five energy-wasting practices in their scenario...

05:00

Each team presents its results!

Verification questions:

How can these strategies be implemented in daily life?

What are the most practical solutions and why?

Saving energy not only saves money, but also protects the environment by ensuring that future generations have access to clean and sustainable energy sources.

Ways to save energy:

Unplugging unused devices - Many electronic devices consume power even when switched off, so unplugging them can save electricity. Renewable energy sources - switching to solar, wind or hydro power reduces dependence on fossil fuels. Smart thermostats and insulation - Proper insulation and programmable thermostats can reduce heating and cooling costs. Public transport and carpooling - Reducing vehicle use reduces fuel consumption and emissions...

According l'EUROSTAT:

In 2023, primary energy consumption in the EU will reach an all-time low of 1 211 Mtoe, 22.0 per cent below the 2030 target.

In 2023, final energy consumption in the EU was 17.2 per cent away from the 2030 target.

In 2012, the European Union (EU) adopted the Energy Efficiency Directive 2012/27/EU and committed to reduce energy consumption by 20 per cent by 2020 compared to the baseline[1].
