Mary first met the radical poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley between her two trips to Scotland.Mary and Percy met secretly a few times at Mary Wollstonecraft's grave in Saint Pancras Cemetery, where they confided their love to each other.On 28 July 1814 the couple secretly eloped to France, taking Mary's half-sister Claire Clairmont with them.[35] Godwin's comment was "They both disappointed me."

Mary Shelley was born in London in 1797. She was a British writer, essayist and philosopher. Daughter of the philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft, forerunner of feminism, and the philosopher and politician William Godwin, at 16 she declared herself to Percy Bysshe Shelley.
