implicit vs explicit meaning

START

IMPLICIT

EXPLICIT

  • The text doesn’t say it directly, but you can figure it out using clues and what you already know.
  • You have to infer (make an educated guess).
  • Example: "Liam grabbed his umbrella and ran outside." (It doesn’t say it’s raining, but we can infer it is!)
  • The text clearly tells you the information.
  • You don’t have to guess—it’s right there!
  • Example: "It was raining outside." (The text directly says it’s raining.)

Open the Case File

Let's try solving a case using implicit and explicit evidence.

Here's the situation:

The football team at Lincoln Middle School is getting ready for the championship game when Coach Davis discovers that his playbook, full of secret strategies, has disappeared! Without it, their game plan is ruined. Who took the playbook, and why?

Open your case files and sort through your evidence. Make a side for 'implicit' and a side for 'explicit' with your group.

What clues are stated directly (explicit)?

What clues are stated indirectly (implicit)?

Coach Davis last saw the playbook in his office at 4:30 PM yesterday. The office was unlocked when he returned at 6:00 PM. Jamal, the backup quarterback, was seen waiting for a ride. Emma, the team manager, was seen carrying equipment to the storage room. Ryan, a player from the rival school, was seen talking to Jamal.

Jamal has been frustrated about not being the starting QB. Ryan is from the rival school—could he have stolen the playbook to help his team? Emma was carrying equipment—but what else was she carrying? Jamal’s backpack looked much fuller than usual when he left.

Discuss!

What are your theories? Who had the motive, or desire, to do it?

And the culprit is...

Emma!

Emma found the playbook on the floor and put it in her equipment bag for safekeeping—but forgot to return it!
