Start by completing the online application form, which must be submitted by the deadline. As part of the application, you'll need to propose both a major tutorial and a minor tutorial. A wide range of subject areas is available, and you can explore sample tutorials here. Once your application is received, you’ll participate in a brief interview with the Honors Committee . To prepare, review the sample interview questions on the website. Carla Sykes (csykes@ut.edu) will contact you to arrange your interview time.
- Spring Term Deadline: October 14 (by 5:00 PM) of the previous year
- Fall Term Deadline: Friday before Spring Break of the same year (by 5:00 PM)
- Interviews: Held 1-2 weeks after the application deadline
My Secondary Tutorial
Conservation Marketing & NGOs
In my secondary tutorial, we delved into the impacts of conservation-related NGOs on a global scale. Our discussions ranged from analyzing their influence on public perception to examining animal ethics within the context of sustainable travel. Through this mentorship, I was invited to join a fascinating research project focused on the depiction of exotic bird feathers and animal products in women’s fashion and advertisements during the late 1800s. We combed through 30 years of The Queen magazine to gather data and analyze this data.
Step #3
Completing the OSAP Application
Your next step is to submit the OSAP application directly through their website. Once submitted, OSAP will emailyou with important next steps, including completing your housing form, submitting a photo for your student ID, and receiving details about your orientation schedule.Students are responsible for booking their own flight to Oxford. The average travel cost is approximately $1,600, which includes a flight to London and a train ticket to Oxford. To help offset travel expenses, you can apply for funding via the UTampa Honors Student Travel Application.
- Connecting with Tutors: OSAP will assign your tutors; some may contact you before the term begins, while others will connect once you arrive in Oxford.
- Major Tutorial (9 credits): Meets weekly
- Minor Tutorial (5 credits): Meets bi-weekly
- College Placement: OSAP will place you in one of four colleges — Oriel, New, Trinity, or Magdalen

Oxford's Library System
A Historical Hub for Research
Oxford’s library system is one of the oldest and most expansive in the world. The Bodleian Library, dating back to the 1600s, houses over 13 million printed items. The system spans across over 100 libraries at Oxford, including specialized departmental and faculty libraries. Since the 1980s, Oxford has implemented advanced technology like the Oxford Libraries Information Service (OLIS), which unites all these libraries through an integrated library system, providing digital access and easy resource management.
- Bodleian Library: 13+ million printed items
- Comprehensive System: 100+ libraries across the city of Oxford

The Sustainable Guide to Oxford
Since leaving Oxford, I've been working on an exciting project with AfterCloud, a digital storytelling platform. I'm building the first-ever digital, sustainable guide to Oxford, showcasing the top 50 sustainable spots in the city. This guide is designed for both tourists and locals to engage with eco-friendly businesses and experiences. During my time in Oxford, I personally visited each of these locations, connecting with business owners to understand their sustainability efforts. Now, I'm collaborating with them to bring this guide to life and pitching it to the Oxford City Council in hopes of securing sponsorship for this valuable resource.
Formal Dinners at Oxford
One of the highlights of student life at Oxford is the tradition of formal dinners, which are held regularly at each college, sometimes up to twice a week. To attend, you simply sign up in advance and pay a small fee. The three-course meal offers a variety of options, with some flexibility to modify dishes. The formal dinner is steeped in tradition, with some rules to enhance the experience. It's also a fantastic opportunity to try English cuisine and connect with students, whether they’re from your college or studying abroad.

Long-term Benefits
Research has shown that studying abroad not only broadens one's global perspective but also enhances cognitive abilities. These experiences push students to think outside the box, adapt to new environments, and approach challenges from different angles. Carrying these benefits with you after the program ends can have a lasting impact on your personal and professional life. The skills you gain while studying abroad continue to influence and enrich your decision-making and adaptability in various aspects of life.
- Enhanced Creative Thinking
- Broader Global Perspective
- Improved Cross-Cultural Communication
Mastering the Tutorial System
Tutorial assignments typically consist of written essays or research papers. Your tutor will assign a topic or question, along with a reading list. The materials you'll need can be accessed from the Bodleian Libraries, in which you will need to request to view them. You’ll usually have 1-2 weeks to complete the assignment, after which you’ll meet with your tutor for a tutorial session. Instead of just submitting your paper, you’ll discuss your findings and arguments, allowing for a deeper, more interactive learning experience.
My Primary Tutorial
UK Travel Industry Trends
I worked with my tutor to create a sustainable travel journal for my brand, Chasing Cassidy. This journal combined sustainable travel practices with creative design, and we built it to appeal to eco-conscious travelers. We were in the prototype phase, testing various designs and materials, all while researching manufacturers to ensure we stayed aligned with sustainability principles. The project was not only an academic challenge but also an exciting way to apply my knowledge of sustainable tourism and conservation in a practical, real-world setting.

OSAP Day Trips
One of my favorite parts of participating in OSAP were the field trips and excursions. These trips were optional for students but highly encouraged. The university provided transportation, planned activities, and access to key attractions, making them an easy way to experience the country's history, culture, and landmarks. Some of the trips I had the chance to join included day excursions to iconic destinations like London, Hampton Court Palace, Warwick Castle, and Portsmouth. These outings usually involved a mix of structured activities, such as guided tours and museum visits, but there was also plenty of free time to explore on your own or with a group of friends!
Step #2
Navigating the International Programs Office
Once accepted into the Oxford Study Abroad Program, Carla Sykes will reach out with your OSAP registration and housing request forms. Next, you’ll work with the International Programs Office to handle essential travel and credit paperwork. This includes the course approval form and the transient credit form. You'll meet with the appropriate department chair (e.g., the history chair for a history tutorial) to confirm how your tutorial credits will apply to your transcript.

The Unique College System at Oxford University
Oxford’s 36 independent colleges are a hallmark of the university’s educational structure. This system is distinctive in the UK, which follows a binary model of higher education, where institutions are divided between traditional universities and vocationally focused ones. Though each college operates independently, it remains integrated into the broader university structure, ensuring access to the same academic resources and teaching. This allows students to enjoy the best of both worlds: a personalized college experience while benefiting from Oxford’s renowned academic departments.
- Independent Colleges: 36 colleges with their own governance
- Strong Community Focus: Includes residential areas, dining, and extracurriculars
- Academic Integration: Courses provided by academic departments, not limited by college affiliation

Oxford's Impact on Local Community
From cultural events to local businesses, Oxford’s economy thrives off the symbiotic relationship between the city and its colleges. For example, Wadham College’s support of local arts initiatives and St. John’s College’s engagement with local charities. In 2018-19, the total economic impact of the University on the UK economy was estimated at approximately £15.7 billion. This includes local businesses benefiting from the student presence, such as cafes, bookstores, and housing services. Beyond finances, the college system directly contributes to the city’s cultural fabric.
- Economic Boost: Local cafes and bookstores benefit from student traffic
- Historical Preservation: Colleges help maintain Oxford's rich history and educate visitors
- Urban Growth: The city's infrastructure evolves to accommodate the growing student population
