The Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty is one of the most famous monuments in the world and is located in New York, on an island called Liberty Island. It was a gift from France to the United States to celebrate the friendship between the two countries and the concept of freedom and democracy. The project began in 1875, and the statue was designed by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, while the internal structure was designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel. The statue is about 93 metres high and was made of copper, turning green over time due to oxidation.
The statue holds a torch in one hand, symbolising the light of liberty. In her other hand she holds a tablet, with the date of the Independence of the United States . He wears a crown with seven points, representing the seven continents and the seven seas, signifying that freedom belongs to the whole world. At his feet are broken chains, symbolising the end of slavery. For millions of immigrants who came to the United States in the 1800s and 1900s, the Statue of Liberty was the first symbol of hope and a new life.
