1. Anchor
Anchor
An anchor is an introduction to an assignment or project that gives realistic connections between the task at hand and circumstances that may exist outside of the classroom. It gives an intreiguing reason for students to want to get involved with the task.
Keywords:
IIntroduction, realistic, connection
2. Task
Task
Tasks narrow project work efforts by giving a specific item or list to complete. At the start of a project or assignemnt, students need to know what is expected of them. Teachers can help students understand what is expected of them by giving them a detailed task to be completed. Examples of the finished product, thorough explanations, and given rubrics are practical ways teachers can use tasks.
3. Directions
Directions
Directions give students the guidance they need to complete the task at hand. Directions help students:
- Know what to do
- Stay on task..
- Make progress on their project
- Understand what is expected of their project
4. Student Choices
Student Choices:
It is imperative that tasks and instrutctions are not too specific that they limit student choices in their work. The teacher needs to give the student the chance to make choices in project-based learning.
Choices Students Can Make
Information resources to use and format for the task
Group members roles and responsibilities
Steps to take to complete the project
5. Student Inquiry
Student Inquiry
Student inquiry allows students to find and evaluate different information to help them in the process of completing a project. Students might use resources like books and websites to find this information.
Students can present and explanin their findings and thought process to their teacher and peers.
6. Collaboration and Teamwork
Team Work
Team work is grouping students together to work on a given task. This is helpful in teaching students how to balance responsibilities and tasks among team members instead of having a select few members carry the weight of the team.
Collaboration
Collaboration is the act of students working together and sharing ideas to make progress on and complete a given task. Collaboration is very important for teaching students how to communicate well and work with peers towards a common goal.
7. Teacher Coaching and Feedback
Feedback
Feedback is the commentary by the teacher on the work being presented/given by a student. This could look like a comment on an assignement, or a student-teacher meeting where more extensive feedback is given.
Teacher Coaching
Teacher coaching is the act of a teacher working with students, leading them in the right direction on the project they are working on. This could look like small check ins throughout the working process where the teacher shares input on the work being done.
8. Student Reflection
Student Reflection:
Student reflections are written by students after completing an assignment or project. These are often written based on prompts given by teachers with questions like those listed below:
What did you learn during this project?
What do you still need to know about this topic to be successful?
What prior knowledge did you have that helped you through this project?

9. Public Presentation
Public Presentation
Public presentation gives students the opportunity to share what they have learned with their peers, teachers, and parents. This also helps them develop public speaking skills. Teachers could invite parents or other classes of students to come into the classroom for students to give public presentations.
