Project Based Learning & the Nine Elements

The Elements: 1. Anchor 2. Task 3. Directions 4. Student Choices 5. Student Inquiry 6. Collaboration and Teamwork 7. Teacher Coaching and Feedback 8. Student Reflection 9. Public Presentation

Project Based learning is the act of creating projects as a part of learning. Students develop projects, make desicisons, incorporate knowldge, and collaborate. This style of learning is very beneficial to students.

Anchor

This is an introduction to a real world connection styled project Encourages students to engage in their project and real life scanarios.

Examples: Writing a school paper article A project about endangered wildlife Create a new law for your state to pass

Task

Examples: A teacher sets a timeline for each part of the project. A group leader gives every person a role to play in the project.

This guides the focus of the work by stating specific guidelines and timelines. Often created by a teacher or group leader

Directions

Guidence for students in project based learning . Tells students what exactly to do for their assignment

Examples:A teacher tells the students exact requriements of an assignment. The principal allows students to take a trip for their project. They must follow specific rules on their trip.

Student Choices

The ability for the student to make decisions for themselves or group. Examples: Students must choose a fish to study. They can choose any fish. A group can do any type of presentation (visual, artistic, powerpoint, etc.)

Student Inquiry

The students are asking questions and evaluating information. This can be to the teacher, their peers, or to themselves.

Examples: A student is unsure of a direction given to them by the teacher. A group is confused about information they found on Wikipedia.

Collaboration & Teamwork

Students work on leadership skills among each other. Can work seperately to eventually come together.

Examples: An online class has a group assignment. Students do not directly work together. Students are in a classroom to work on a group project.

Teacher Coaching & Feedback

Teachers should provide feedback for student growth. Coaching increases student productivity.

Examples:Students recieve a rubric after a presentation. A student is off task and needs redirecting.

Student Reflection

Students can reflect as an individual or group. Many different things to consider.

Examples:Students should do an exit ticket about their behavior. Studnents write a paragraph about their collaboration with others on a project.

Public Presentation

This is a great way to portray your personal knowledge and work ethic. You can connect with others on many different levels.

Examples:You give a presentation to your community on your winning science project. You are showcasing your research information to the school board.
