Transcript

In this lesson, you will show what you know about the respiratory system through interactive activities, puzzle assembly, and making a model by using your preferred method:
  • Sculpting with Play-Doh (sculpting clay)
  • Drawing with a pen and paper or digital tools
  • Cutting and pasting

OVERVIEW

Click on the image to label the parts of the respiratory system. Record your score and time to compare them to the score and time you earn when you do this activity again at the end of the lesson.

Choose your game:

Play Monster Brawl

Play Tower Defense 2

Play Crazy Kingdom

Respiration is the process of gas exchange. We inhale the gas oxygen and exhale the gas carbon dioxide.
Respiration (the process of inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide, i.e., breathing) can start in the nasal cavity (nose) or the oral cavity (mouth).
The pharynx (fa-rinks) is also called the throat. Air leaves the nasal or oral cavity and enters the pharynx.
The larynx (la-rinks) is also called your voice box. It is located between the bottom of the pharynx (fa-rinks) and the top of the trachea (tray-kee-uh).

10

The trachea (tray-kee-uh) is also called the windpipe. It allows air to flow from the upper part of the respiratory system into the bronchi.

11

The bronchus (brun-kus) (singular) is a tube at the bottom of the trachea. The bronchus splits into two bronchi (brun-kai) (plural of bronchus) that connect to the lungs.

12

The bronchioles (brun-hee-ohls) branch off the bronchi to enable air to reach the deepest parts of the lungs.

13

Alveoli (al-vee-uh-lie) are tiny air sacs at the ends of bronchioles. Alveoli enable the exchange of oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream and carbon dioxide from the bloodstream to the lungs.

14

The lungs are the main organs of the respiratory system. There are two lungs. Each lung has lobes: the right one has three lobes, and the left has two.

15

The diaphragm (die-uh-fram) is a muscle that contracts and moves downward when you inhale (breathe in) and relaxes when you exhale (breathe out).

16

It's Puzzle time!!!

Your finished puzzle should look like this.

18

Now, make your model of the respiratory system using Play-Doh, clay, pen and paper, or digital tools.

19

What was the best score and time you earned in your first attempt(s) to label the respiratory system? Do the activity again to see if you can beat your score and time.
