"The Ultimate Suring Company"

Rip Curl is a surfer owned organization that was created in 1969 by Brian Singer and Doug Warbrick. As one of the worlds most respected brands, Rip Curl has been at the center of the surf scene since it's creation. Rip Curl sells clothing, hosts events, and sponsors athletes all around the world. In 1999 they started sponsoring Bethany Hamilton at just nine years old. Hamilton and Rip Curl parted ways in 2023.

On October 31, 2003, off the shore of Tunnels Beach in Kauai, Hawaii, a then 13-year-old, Bethany Hamilton, was surfing with friends when she was suddenly attacked by a tiger shark. The shark took Hamilton's left arm, and also a large bite out of her surfboard.

This area of a surfboard is known as the deck, which is where a surfer puts their feet when riding a wave. To get a better grip on the board while paddeling out or standing up, surfers apply wax to the deck. Becuase surboards are made to glide through water, they can also become extreamly slippery, which is why wax comes in handy to professional and beginners alike.

This part of a surfboard is known as the fins, which help surfers manoeuver their boards in the water at high speeds. The fins are located at the rear on the bottom/underside of the surfboard, which is what goes in the water when in use. Fins come in all different shapes, sizes, and numbers. See the graph below for examples. Graph provided by surfhub.com

Rails

This area of a surfboard, also known as the sides of the surfboard, are called the rails. Rails help the surfboard grip into the wave as it's being ridden. This is also where surfers grab the bord to duck dive under big waves. Duck diving is a surfing technique in which a surfer has to grab both rails of the board, push the nose under the water and kick the board through the water under the wave. Becuase Hamilton lost her left arm in the attack, she had to adapt to duck diving but using a handle in the middle of her board instead of the rail.
