Hymn Of Ravens

Viking-inspired universe set around the 10th century. The island of Skýgarðr, a rugged and mysterious land marked by power struggles, ancient legends, and deep ties to Norse mythology. It is home to several factions, each with their own beliefs and ways of life, often at odds with each other.

Plain text lore version

Kviðrheim

An ancient, crumbling site in the northern part of Skýgarðr. Its origins are unknown, but legend has it that Loki once used it as a hiding place from Odin's wrath while in Midgard. Strange occurrences, whispers in the wind and unexplained disappearances fuel the superstitions surrounding Kviðrheim. Many believe that great power lies buried within the ruins.

A settlement near Kviðrheim, founded by a group of warriors exiled from Jarnborg for disobedience. The people are hardened survivors, some driven by revenge, others by ambition. They believe that Kviðrheim holds the key to overthrowing the Jarl, and they seek to harness its secrets. They raid Jarnborg's supply lines and lead expeditions into Kviðrheim, despite the dangers. Svikari has a leader who is as ruthless as the Jarl of Jarnborg, if not more so. The man is driven by personal revenge against the Jarl who banished him.

Svikari

Yggskarn

A small, close-knit village, deeply connected to nature and spiritual beliefs.

They live in harmony with the land, hunt and gather sustainably, and respect the gods in all aspects of life. The people of Yggskarn also worship Einangr, a massive dead tree believed to be a portal to Asgard through Bifröst. They are at odds with Jarnborg, seeing its expansion as an affront to the gods and a danger to Skýgarðr.

A heavily fortified and highly developed settlement ruled by a ruthless Jarl who values strength and expansion above all else. His people are warriors and laborers, fiercely loyal to the Jarl out of fear or ambition. They value strength above all else. Near the settlement are a few caves rich in iron ore, which not only supports local production, but also a steady and profitable trade. Jarnborg often raids, stealing gold, valuables, and people they deem useful. The settlement is at odds with Yggskarn due to conflicting beliefs.

Jarnborg

A towering, gnarled, and dead tree that stands near Yggskarn. No one knows why it died and how the forest around it remained untouched. The villagers hold rituals and festivals around Einangr to pray for its power to protect the island from misfortune and bring good harvests. The people of Yggskarn believe that the tree is a remnant of one of the roots of Yggdrasil. It is believed to be a portal to Asgard, though there is no actual proof, and no knowledge on how to activate it, or if it is possible at all.

Skýgarðr

Skýgarðr is a crescent-shaped island with diverse landscapes, including dense forests, towering mountains, and expansive sandy shores. It's believed that the island got its shape from the war of the Asgardian gods, when Odin struck his spear Gungnir on the land, creating a rift. The other part of the island, the one that broke off, has long since sunk into the ocean.
