The floods in Rio Grande do Sul began on April 29, 2024 to May 2024. The severe flooding was caused by heavy rains and storms that hit the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul and adjacent Uruguayan cities. From April 29 to May, it resulted in 181 deaths (as of July 7, 2024), widespread landslides and the collapse of a dam.
Size of the problem
Data from the Hydraulic Research Institute of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul shows that the rains in May washed more than 14 trillion liters of water into Lake Guaíba. The excessive rainfall affected more than 60% of the state's territory.
Downtown Porto Alegre flooded on May 5, 2024
Losses
In all, approximately 183 people died, 27 were missing and 806 were injured. Around 2.4 million people were affected by the rains in the Central, Vales, Serra and Metropolitan regions of Porto Alegre, with more than 442,000 residents having to leave their homes (around 18,000 in shelters and 423,000 displaced).
