Andragogy vs Pedagogy
Understanding Adult Learning Theories
Adult learning theorist Malcom Knowles explains how adult and child learning differ from one another. Adult learning is known as anadragogy, and student learning is known as pedagogy. According to Knowles, andragogy is when a facilitator helps a student reach their mostly self-determined learning goals while the learner is seen as an equal, mature, motivated, and voluntary partner in the learning interaction (Cloke, 2024).

Malcolm Knowles' principles of andragogy
- Learning orientation: Adults want to use what they learn in their daily lives.
- Readiness to learn: When adults have a valid reason and it advances their objectives, they are more willing to learn.
- Self-concept: Adults like to be in charge of their education. Adults require personal motivation to acquire new skills.
- Experience as an adult learner: Adults have a wealth of life experience that may help them learn. Adults are curious as to why they must acquire certain knowledge.
- Self-directed learning: Adults are motivated by their own internal drives and objectives.
Andragogy vs Pedagogy
(Western Governors University, 2022).
Promoting self-directed learning and offering practice opportunities are two andragogical techniques for including adult learners in instructional coaching.
Learning on one's own
- Give students the flexibility to investigate their own learning requirements and encourage them to take charge of their education.
- Give them lots of practice time and make sure they comprehend a subject completely before going on. Repetition is key.
