Things that happened during the war

Gettysburg Address

Emancipation Proclamation

Famous speech at the battle of Gettysburg that gave meaning to the sacrifice of over 50,000men who had died in the battle. it also declared that the United States had to stand as a country where all men are created equal and should be treated as equals.

was a presidential decree issued by Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, that declared freedom for enslaved people in the Confederate states.

How this Started!

The Northern and Southern states have been fighting over states rights and the right to decide if a place can permit slavery for years!

Slave states were mad that Abraham Lincoln a Northerner won the Presidential Election. They were worried that he would ban slavery in the South.

After the Election of 1860 the Southern states began to secede.

Fearful that the South would secede the Union. Lincoln used his Presidential address(speech) to ask for unity.
