What is Within word Pattern?

Within word pattern stage refers to a developmental phase in reading and spelling where students are focusing on identifying and applying vowel patterns within single syllable words

What grade level do you typically see this stage?

Typically, you see this stage in 2nd and 3rd grade, but can see it as low as first grade or possibly in 4th or 5th grade.

-During this phase, readers stop finger pointing and read more in phrases -These readers often read at the oral rate of 100 words per minute -Students within this stage are able to do longer amounts of silent reading -Able to decode the words by chunks instead of letter by letter

Key Characteristics of this stage

-Its a transitional stage between very emergent readers and intermediate stage -Students in this particular stage can read most single syllable words and use context clues for two and three syllable words -Able to read with less effort, but way more easily frustrated with their reading quicker -Able to learn sight words during this phase

Within Word Pattern Games I:

  • Goldfish for Vowel Pairs
  • Players try to collect pairs of words with the same vowel sound, like "cat" and "hat"
  • Materials needed:
  • Cards with different words that sound alike
  • Each student takes a turn, your goal is to collect a set of 2 or 3 or 4 words that sound alike. If the student asks another if they have a word that has the same vowel sound as cat, then they pass the card over and the student says what that word/vowel sound is. If they don’t, the other student says goldfish and that student that asked, has to draw a card. The winner is the one with the most pairs at the end.

Within Word Pattern Game II:

  • Picture Sort for Vowel Pairs
  • Match pictures to corresponding words based on the vowel sound they represent
  • Number of students: at least 1 to 4
  • Materials needed: Cards with pictures on them. On the board, you will need the vowel letters like a or ai, etc.
  • Instructions: Students will take turns and match the pictures to the correct vowel sounds. So if the picture is of a bat, they need to match it to the right vowel. The teacher will not help them in this case. Once all the students have gone and all the pictures have been matched, the teacher will go over where the students placed the pictures. The teacher will ask how they came to that conclusion for each one and to correct if it's wrong.
