Death row in texas has decreased due to less crime in the recent years specifcally the crime of homocide. As of January 1, 2025, there were 2,092 people on death row in the United States, including 46 women. However, the number of people on death row changes often.

October 1, 2020, there were 2,557 inmates on death row in the United State. Texas had a large death row population, third in the nation after California and Florida. In 2022, the death row population dropped to under 200 inmates for the first time in almost three decades, and by the start of 2025, there were 174 people on Texas' death row.

In 2015, Texas had 49 new death sentences, the fewest since 1973. December 11, 2017, there are 234 death row inmates, which includes six women. This constitutes the smallest Texas death row population since 1987. In 2018, the United States saw a record low in the use of the death penalty, with 25 executions and fewer than 50 death sentences. This was the fourth year in a row with fewer than 30 executions.
